LAMELLAR ARMOUR

Lamellar is by far the most variable of the external small plate armours. The extreme diversity of lamellar constructions is potent evidence that this armour was not a singular invention which dispersed from one point of origin. There are forms of lamellar which are so radically different in their structure that they could not have evolved from a common ancestor, let alone one from the other. Furthermore, there are elementary forms which reappear over such vast gulfs of space and time, thus suggesting a direct connection is not credible. It must be concluded, therefore, that while some patterns of transmission and evolution can be observed in the historical record, lamellar armour was a technology invented and reinvented anew time and again.

That extreme diversity of structures also means it is impossible to create a typology of lamellar forms in the way that is possible for scale armour. Lamellar structures can be categorised thus:
